Is It Irritable Bowel Syndrome or Carcinoid Cancer? Think Zebras, Not Horses

So often misdiagnosed as irritable bowel syndrome or Crohn’s disease, carcinoid cancer is a diagnosis where doctors are thinking zebras not horses.  The saying goes back to medical school when students are taught to consider the uncommon.  “Ninety-nine percent of the time if you hear a hoof beat, it came from a horse.  But for that one percent of the time, it was a zebra,” explains Dr. Eugene Woltering, one of the country’s leading carcinoid and neuroendocrine cancer specialists.
