Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of the Cumberland YMCA in Maryland, the YMCA/Rocky Gap Triathlon, and a carcinoid patient and her family, the Carcinoid Cancer Foundation is one of three charitable organizations being supported by the June 5, 2010 Triathlon.
The 23rd annual YMCA/Rocky Gap Triathlon will be held at the beautiful Rocky Gap State Park in Flintstone, Maryland, on Saturday, June 5 beginning at 9:00 am. Fitness aficionados, workout fans, family, friends, and colleagues are invited to participate in the event or enjoy watching bikers, runners, and swimmers as they compete in the triathlon. Last year’s event attracted over 250 people and at least 100 more are expected this year.
The event includes both a sprint triathlon and an international triathlon. The sprint triathlon consists of a quarter-mile swim, an 8-mile biking component, and a 3.1 mile run. Now in its second year, the international triathlon consists of a .93 mile swim, 22-mile bike ride and a 6.2 mile run.
Karen Smith, co-director of the triathlon, said there are several improvements to the course in 2010. Runners and bikers have been separated, the international course has been changed from a two-loop course to a big single loop, and the swim course is more of an open water swim.
Registration for the triathlon will continue through May 23. T-shirts will be available for all participants and prizes will be given to the top three participants in each age group. And for those with achy muscles, a professional masseuse will also be available during the event!
The triathlon is sponsored by Hammer Nutrition, Endurance Fuels & Supplements, and GO 106 FM, which will provide live music, remote coverage and entertainment. The three charities being supported by this year’s event are The Carcinoid Cancer Foundation, the Joanna M. Nicolay Melanoma Foundation, and the United Ways of the Potomac Highlands. Thank you!!!
