“A Patient’s Perspective on Integrative Oncology: Getting Past the ‘War,’ Living with and Beyond Cancer” by Josh Mailman has been published in the November 2014 issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute Monographs focused on Integrative Oncology. Diagnosed with a metastatic neuroendocrine tumor (NET) of the pancreas 8 years ago, Josh has chosen to combine conventional medical treatments for NETs with complementary care, including stress relief, managing fatigue following conventional treatments, and diet.
“Learning how to understand and navigate multiple sources of information and make evidence informed decisions on complementary care has helped me live with a cancer that cannot be cured, but can be treated as a chronic disease,” says Josh.
Josh is an extremely active member of the NET, Nuclear Medicine and Integrative Medicine communities, serving as President of the NorCal CarciNET Community, Chair of the Patient Advocate Advisory Board for the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI), Co-Chair of the Patient Advocate Taskforce for the Society for Integrative Oncology (SIO) and a member of the National Cancer Institute’s taskforce on NETs. He also served on the Executive Board of the SIO from 2009-2013.
