Dr. Portenoy is Chairman of the Department of Pain Medicine and Palliative Care at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City.  He is also the Chief Medical Officer of Continuum Hospice Care/The Jacob Perlow Hospice and Professor of Neurology and Anesthesiology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.  He is Past President of the American Pain Society and has received numerous awards for his work.  The focus of his research has been on clinical trials of analgesic drugs, opiod pharmacology, symptom measurement, and quality of life assessment.  He serves as Editor in Chief of The Journal of Pain and Symptom Management, an international, peer-reviewed journal; Associate Editor for Clinical Sciences of Pain; and Editor for the Palliative Care Section of The Oncologist.
